Lens Calibrator: Automatic Wide-Angle Distortion Correction in Motioncube

Wide-angle cameras are excellent for covering large interactive surfaces, but they come with a common trade-off: geometric distortion. Straight lines bend, the image geometry changes across the frame, and tracking accuracy can suffer - especially near the edges.

To solve this, we’ve added a new module to Motioncube: Lens Calibrator.

What Lens Calibrator does

Lens Calibrator performs camera calibration and image undistortion to correct wide-angle lens deformation. The calibration is based on standard checkerboard calibration patterns, aligned with modern best practices in camera calibration.

Fully automatic workflow (built for non-technical users)

We designed the process to be as frictionless as possible:

  • automatic frame scanning
  • checkerboard detection
  • calibration error estimation
  • best-frame selection
  • calibration parameters computation
  • undistortion applied to the live camera image

The result is a calibrated camera view that’s ready to use in your Motioncube setup.

Why it matters for interactive installations

Correct geometry means more reliable tracking - which translates directly into better performance for:

  • fast ball tracking on interactive walls
  • interactive pen detection
  • finger touch interaction

Lens Calibrator is fully integrated in Motioncube, so you can test and onboard new camera models faster and deploy with more confidence.
